If Mies Van der Rohe is right and “God is in the details,” here are a few: I make an excellent bouillabaisse with garlic aioli; I am a feminist who likes men to hold the door for me and walk on the street side; I’ve been practicing Ashtanga yoga for sixteen years, and I’m fortunate to have a career as a filmmaker that is a passionate calling and not simply a job. I view life as an unfolding adventure and seek a partner on the journey. I’ve lived in London, Martha’s Vineyard, Paris, and currently divide my time between New York and Los Angeles. If you’d like to see Shakespeare at The Globe, eat at a local bistro after a day at the Musee d’Orsay, body surf at Lucy Vincent Beach, hear Dudamel conduct at Disney Hall followed by Chinese dinner at an obscure restaurant in Monterey Park, or just read Nabokov, Woolf or the New Yorker in bed, I’m your girl.

I’m 54, Ivy League educated, and a card carrying member of the A.C.L.U. I’ve been told I look like an “intellectual Jean Seberg.” You can look at my photos and decide for yourself.

To be absolutely candid, this parallel universe of on-line dating repulses me. The artifice and linearity that characterize the milieu is something I’ve always rejected. Women have always, quite simply, ‘been there,’ as a logical extrapolation of being alive in the world. For reasons I don’t entirely understand, that’s no longer true. I suspect the peripatetic life I’ve led in the last two 1/2 years…since my divorce…is a causal vector. Random thoughts: 57, 5’9″, 145 lbs, shoulder-length silver/brown curly/wavy hair, small, very neat and closely cropped goatee, sometimes glasses. Former U.S. Army Special Forces…in a galaxy far, far away…politically left, revolted by the societal macrocosm that fails to believe that a human…simply by virtue of existence, has an intrinsic right to safe shelter, medical care, and nourishing food…Ivy MBA, classic investment banker, senior level corporate IT executive.

Ultra-endurance athlete that left that universe to chase Ph.D’s in English Literature and Cinema Studies (never completed either); M.S. in Exercise Physiology & Nutrition that allowed me to turn an avocation into a vocation as a ‘personal trainer’ in private practice with an elite client base of names you would recognize.

All of that came to a crashing end two years ago. I left the City to ‘wander’ out West. Returned after Christmas of 2011 to write a memoir and to, yet again, play the Phoenix. Currently a private investment banking consultant to global IT/Internet firms.

Passions? Film, literature, Florence, the Metropolitan Museum, ultra-distance running and Ironman-length triathlons.

I don’t like being alone… at all.

There’s a little voice in my head that’s telling me to stop now. I do want to tell you, however, that the woman that finds her way into my life will be the final one; I want to be married. The ring, the commitment, all of it.

If you choose to react to this tome, I would much prefer a bi-dimensional contact. So, if you’re not alienated by all of this chatter, please send a recent photo and I’d be happy to send you several of me with my number.

Oh yes, one more point: I’m open to relocation.

I’m close, and I’m listening.

Upper Midwest college librarian, public library consultant, and grower/raiser of chemical free vegetables and chickens seeking woman with lots of varied interests even if different from mine. I have yet to make my first $1 million selling produce and eggs but the journey is fine. I am one of those “hard to find anymore” generalists — jack of all trades, master of none. I am a lover of novels, but non-fiction often captures me. Looking for that woman who does not mind huddling up to a Norwegian woodstove and getting warm twice by splitting wood periodically. Cuddling up together also would have to be part of our lifestyle. I am a “young 69″ man who still likes young people and dogs (and cats now). My 30 acres of woods, ponds, and fields provide great entertainment and nature lullabies, but I am looking for a person to explore theater and other arts together in nearby Twin Cities so that I don’t go too primitive here. Man seeking woman.

MWM, mid-50s, successful professional, NYC area, seeks MF for long-term e-mail penpal…and the possibility of meeting. I’ve been married a long time — and, unfortunately, there’s not much fun and excitement left in it. I’d love to compare notes with a woman in a similar situation … and, in particular, with an intelligent and sensitive woman who loves to craft thoughtful e-mails on a regular basis. Just to be clear: I am interested in exchanging “thoughtful” e-mails, not salacious ones. Learning about someone initially through text alone can be a wonderful experience. If everything were to click and we were both ready … then we might decide to meet. But first… let’s just write. About me: I’m a lawyer, Ivy educated, reasonable looks. I’m not pompous nor arrogant — and consider myself a good listener. I enjoy long conversations about anything and everything…the political, the personal and everything in between.

Will send photo on request. I live in northern NJ and would prefer to hear from someone from my area.

A valid passport wouldn’t hurt either! In return, you get a woman who has been known to turn more than a few heads, and is also smart, well-read, funny, magnetic (and obviously good with an adjective!)…who enjoys a night watching “March Madness” as much as “Giselle,” would love to root RF in person at Wimbledon, who loves books and bookstores (the few that are left), all things French, architecture/design, animals, my 17-year-old niece…and more…and who has navigated the ups and downs of 64 years with — I hope — grace, humor, and optimism. Woman seeking man, Washington, DC area. My marriage lost any romantic quality more than a decade ago and I miss the affection and intimacy essential to a full, rich life. I hope to meet a mature, independent woman in similar circumstances who is interested in creating a unique, committed, private 2-person universe apart from her own secure but emotionally unfulfilled existence. Love mountains, art, books (poetry and poetic fiction). Looking for best friend/lover to exchange books, camp, hike, ride bikes, peruse museums, walk strange and familiar streets, stroll parks, see world, be best audience at readings. Have one small dog who has three cats. If there were more rooms, there’d be more pets. You can’t have too many animals or two many trees. I watch TV sometimes: Dexter, Monk, Louie C.K., independent films, mostly, never developed a taste for reality TV but still watch news, usually Link/TV (Democracy Now, Al Jazeera). Or Jon Stewart. So far left you need binoculars to see me from the middle; no anarchist but I get the energy. Want a man, single, kind, who laughs, sticks around and says some smart, surprising things, likes my dog. And cats.

Value honesty, intelligence, empathy. Also sex, but mostly with love. So, looking for that. You?

My special lover and friend has these characteristics: smart and literate, playful, generally content, emotionally and logistically available, excellent communications skills, empathic, caring, good self care habits of food, exercise and moderation, sensual and sexually alive, socially aware and engaged, financially secure. I offer these attributes too. I am 54, but very youthful, active in the property I own and rent, split time between Central Florida (winter and spring) and NorEast and Northern CA for summer and fall. I have been married twice ( 7 years and 12 years) and learned plenty about myself…and importance in choosing a partner…with time and patience. Except I am not too patient. I am physically fit — not thin tho’, I don’t smoke, drink or do drugs. But have done all of that and am ok if my friends are moderate….

I have medical/RN background, but my story is convoluted and unique. My children are grown, I am free to travel — but I will keep a foot here in Daytona Beach as I have rental properties and a young grandson….

I don’t want to invest a lot of wasted time in emails with folks who are too busy with work, carrying a torch for past love, actually involved with another (unless you are both poly and open)…. If you are gentle, nurturing and affectionate- we will get along well.

Be well. :-)

59 y.o. Berkshires woman (Great Barrington) seeks a regular guy. I write on a somber spring evening. The buzz of spring is put to bed; the lights are low, my guests gone home (the dishes done). I lie down on the floor, surrounded by the jazz music I adore (and the doleful gaze of my 20 lb pooch). The floor feels good at the end of a day like this, a beautiful carpet cushions me as I do a few stretches and check in with my fatigue. The thought tonight is, “It’s going to take a miracle.” Here’s the scoop: I’m a Vassar grad, have a good sense of who I am, darn used to my way of doing things, but yet more interested in opening up the next chapter. It’s transition time, one hallmark of which is the good state of my biz and my affairs. I’m now ready to devote time to both me and you. Living in a fabulous town, and would love to lure you here, but I’m open to change.

Life isn’t fair, and I know I’ve been a very lucky girl growing up, born to entrepreneurial parents in Fairfield County, CT. I’ve had nearly every educational advantage, but didn’t really start working until I got to grad school (design). My career took center stage in my 20′s – 40′s in NYC. Left town in 1994, and finally grew up. A couple wrong turns between there and here, but finally, 2001, settled here in this beautiful house surrounded by loving friends, a strong community of seekers and connectors. I am active in local land use and election issues.

No kids of my own, but close ties w/ children of friends and Fresh Air kids. I create beauty around me, love to cook for you (esp. if you do the dishes), am rejuvenated by music of many stripes. I dance swing with abandon. I make my home and life with honesty, humility — and intention, especially now. And you? Tell me true…

(If you’d like to be in touch, please send a note that introduces you to me broadly, that includes your age and a photo. I will return the favor!)

“I almost wish we were butterflies and liv’d but three summer days — three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.” ~John Keats

I’m spontaneous, intelligent, kind, witty interesting and interested, affectionate and nice (can be naughty, with encouragement from the right man.) Cultured, with a love of reading, theater, old and new movies, ballroom dancing, art and most music — lovers of the bagpipes and rap, please take note, this is not music, really. I enjoy intimacy, have a vivid imagination and an adventurous spirit. I lean leftward, politically but am willing to engage in reasonable discussion with those who disagree — for a while, anyway. I’m a happy woman: friends tell me that unless I’ve missed a meal, you should find me quite pleasant and thanks to the luck of good genes and valiant efforts to exercise, I’m fit and have a good, slender figure. A young 64.

Ten years ago, I went swimming in the Amazon, trusting the guide when he said the piranha weren’t hungry. It seems he was right. By now, you have gathered that I enjoy travel and adventure, which can be exciting and fun but really, I’m just as happy on a drive in the country with a man who makes my heart beat a little faster. Oh, and I can even drive a stick shift.

The search is on for an intelligent, cultured man who likes women, has a romantic spirit, a sense of humor and is interested in pursuing a relationship.

Seeking mature magic… Been in love three times, married one of them. But sometimes love has an expiration date and now as “happy trails” days approach, I would like to experience “it” again. Stolen glances, unspoken messages, secret smiles, unbridled anticipation, heart palpitations (the good kind) and gentle caresses. Former expatriate entrepreneur, I have spent more than half my life outside the US. Irreverent, wicked sense of humor, relentlessly anti-political correctness, sassy, spunky, and still possess a child-like curiosity about life. Passions include my exhausted Kindle, Italian Renaissance artists, classical French technique (the cooking kind) and bold, muscular red wines (men too). Still thrilled with full-time work and endure a daily trek to a purgatory called the gym to remain athletic and physically flexible.

If this sales pitch has piqued your interest, let’s start a correspondence and see where it takes us. Only mature, secure, emotionally intelligent, humorous, well read, well traveled and well mannered 55+ gentlemen need apply. Is my new Frank Doel out there?

Grew up in New England but wound up in West Philly. I’ve been here for what seems like a lifetime but I just discovered when I checked my calculator that it’s only been 26 years. Yes, I’m bad at arithmetic but I’m pretty good at some other stuff. Currently a writer, editor and painter. An excellent listener and I’m looking for the same. Other than that and the ability to talk and laugh freely I don’t have many requests. Except that you be honest, drug-free and politically liberal (I know it’s wrong to discriminate but we’d both be sorry after the get-to-know-you stage). It would be fun to find somebody to hike and kayak and go to museums with while we converse deeply and thrillingly and provide each other with all kinds of yuks. I’m 59 and 5’ 9-3/4” but I’m not a height-ist; I’ve dated men both with and without stature. My photo is attached because I heard that guys like pictures and won’t answer an ad without one. Woman seeking man.

Guess I am just looking for that girl on her tippy toes. “What does that mean?” she said. Read on. It will become crystal clear …. Mid-March in NYC. Spring is around the corner. The weather is changing — even if we did have a bit of snow last week. But still spring is in the air. Need evidence? That March Madness of NCAA hoops begins next week. Baseball begins shortly (Yankee fan). The homestretch of the NY Rangers. And the spring street fairs of NYC in April and May. Nothing beats a sausage and peppers hero from a cart at a street fair in the city! But all these things are much better experienced with someone else. Might that be you? Do you feel the same way? Perhaps this outlet can solve our mutual dilemma. Given that, I decided to toss my hat into cyberspace and see what it kicks back. You are there reading this post as I decided to post. Random? You tell me …

Remember the concept of “dating.”? Wtf happened to it? Where did it go? And do you recall it as well? Spending time with someone. Getting to know about them and from them. Talking about everything and nothing. And just sitting there in comfortable silence. Eyes finally catching one another and then there’s that wink and soft smile. Says more than a 1000 words. Sigh.

While I am pretty good at multitasking, I am not good at multidating. And I get that’s where it’s at for most people. Especially in the online world. Always looking for something else. The next best thing without discovering the wonder of the one person right in front of you. If by some chance you’re not “most people” and would like to really get to know someone new, I hope you’ll say hi. There’s you. And here’s me. We both do better if you and me were an us ;)

So back to that dating thing …

Dating. That long lost art form where two people hang out, get to know each other, and after a few great meetings, fall happily into bed together. We can enjoy each other over coffee or hot cocoa, dinner, a stroll through the farmer’s market, street fairs, a game of bowling or miniature golf, ice skating or just good old-fashioned holding hands at the movies. I don’t think that it matters very much what people actually do if they like one another. Watching paint dry is fun.

I am a smart, attractive SWM ‘of a certain age’ who would absolutely love to meet an unattached woman, on the ‘other side of 40′ (40ish to 60ish), generally hwp, who would enjoy the company of an attractive, smart (not nerdy) man, 48, 6ft tall, 194lbs, full s/p hair, easygoing yet passionate, personable, loyal, polite, libidinous, affable, sensual and an amazing kisser. Whew. A one woman man. Kind. Loyal. Empathetic. Funny. Reliable. Aural and oral. An above average regular guy, attracted to White, Hispanic, Asian and light skinned women of color with a slender to medium or a curvy medium plus build. Who could be characterized as the girl (woman) next door type. I see you women out and about. At the supermarket, bank, post office, just walking down the street. Rocking a pair of jeans and boots. Soon to give way to a summer dress and strappy summer sandals. Give me a moment to gather my thoughts as I move on from that image in my head! Ok. Good to go …

I like doing the normal things. I am content being at a bookstore on a Saturday night. Or a movie. Or just walking around enjoying the scenery, people and one another. Like sports. Think I already mentioned that part! What else? Stream of consciousness writer so bear (bare? ouch) with me. Like the perceptive sarcasm of Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Colbert. Enjoy smart shows: Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Dexter, Homeland, House of Lies, Shameless. Bit of a political junkie. Watching the whole fiscal cliff as though this were Thelma and Louise. Followed by the debt ceiling. And sequestration. (Am I the only one who thinks it odd that sequestration and castration sound so alike?) Politics … too depressing. Yet I can’t turn away! Like slowing down at a car accident scene.

Here’s a thought: A staged “meet cute” for coffee or hot chocolate over the next couple days and just see where things lead. Hopefully, a friendship and relationship with a strong foundation on time spent together. Yes we are all busy but if you want it, you find a way to make the time. It really is quite that simple so let’s not complicate things. Life is complicated enough.

If this works for you, write. We can get to know one another. Good things can happen from spending time together. (Really? Yes, Really Really?? Yes! Yes! Really. They can!) Good relationships need water, sun, time … nurturing. Yes. Yes. Corny for sure. Guilty as charged.

If you are interested — and why wouldn’t you be? he said — just write. After all, I am the most interesting man in the world! When I mail a letter without postage, it still gets there. Even on a Saturday ;-)

As for the photo, really warms my heart. Simple yet complex act of kissing. They are lost in themselves. Not the rain. The rain doesn’t exist for them. Their minds have morphed as have their lips. Eyes closed. Consumed. Sated. That feeling of contentment. And for that moment, all in the world is ok. Calm.

Tell me what you take away from the photo. I look forward to learning about you.

I just read my post as I am wrapping it up — finally you say! Ya know. Looking for typos and such. This is actually pretty simple in theory; it really is. Yet so difficult in practice. So here’s to keeping it simple. Yep. Simple. Guess I am just looking for that girl on her tippy toes. Aha! Told you it would become crystal clear.

So … how about that coffee?
